Hiking on Sado Island Japan

A Travel Guide to Visiting Sado Island Japan

Nestled off the coast of Niigata Prefecture in the Sea of Japan, Sado Island is one of Japan’s hidden gems. Known for its rugged coastline, rich history, and cultural heritage, Sado is a destination that rewards slow travel and an open mind. Whether you’re seeking natural beauty, authentic traditions, or local cuisine, this island offers a glimpse of Japan that feels wonderfully untouched.

Sado Island, Japan (佐渡島, Sadogashima), is one of the largest islands in Japan. Its remote location historically made it a destination for political exiles. Although the island is no longer used for exile purposes, remnants of the culture and religion brought by these forced residents can still be seen today.

Here is our information travel guide on visiting Sado Island in the Niigata Prefecture, Japan, that includes things to do like visiting Shukunegi Village and the gold mines of Sado. We also provided information on how to get around the island, where to stay, and how to get from Niigata Port to Ryotsu Port, Sado.

⇒ Take a look at this Collins Gem Japanese Phrasebook, which includes essential phrases and vocabulary.

Hiking on Sado Island Niigata Japan

Hiking on Sado Island in October, Niigata, Japan

1. Getting around Sado Island, Japan

Sado’s attractions and landmarks are spread out across the island, and public transportation options are limited. The best way to explore is by car, bus, or cycling. You can catch a taxi, but it may prove expensive.

  • Car rental is the most convenient option for getting around the island, and cars can be rented at Ryotsu Port.
  • Public Bus: There are local buses, and you can purchase a 1, 2, or 3-day bus pass that allows unlimited rides.
  • Cycling: For the adventurous, renting a bicycle offers a scenic way to explore coastal routes and villages. Book a 3-Hour Sado Island Highlights Bike Tour with a guide from GYG.

2. Sado Niigata Pass

Consider a Sado Niigata Pass, which includes a return trip on the car ferry in a second-class seat between Niigata Port and Ryotsu Port Sado, a “Sado Three Day Bus Pass” with unlimited rides on all bus routes across the island, and 2-hour electric bicycle rentals available at Sado Tourist Information Centres. Additionally, a Niigata City Loop Bus offers a one-day pass (available in all areas).

3. Shukunegi Village

Travel back in time in this well-preserved fishing village on Sado Island known as Shukunegi Village. With narrow alleyways and wooden houses built from recycled ship planks, the village offers a glimpse into the island’s maritime history. Shukunegi village is situated southwest of Ogi Port, and you can reach it via the Shukunegi bus Line.

The houses are tightly packed together and have been designated as a National Important Preservation Area for Traditional Buildings and Architecture. Some locals still reside in some of the 100 small fishing structures. Highlights include three private dwellings open to the public, including the Triangle House, as well as Shoukoji Temple. Have something to eat afterwards at Sabo Yamashita in Shukunegi village.

4. Tarai-bune (Tub Boat Rides)

One of the most unique things to do on Sado Island is taking a tub boat ride, also known as Shukunegi Tarai. These charming wooden tub boats were traditionally used for fishing in shallow waters. Today, you can hop in one and be rowed along the coast by a local skipper who speaks in the Ogi dialect.

The tub boat experience is available at Ogi Port, near Shukunegi village. Up to two people can ride the tub boat simultaneously, with the trip lasting 30-45 minutes. Prices are per person, and participants must be at least six years old. It offers a fun, quirky experience with breathtaking ocean views. Payments are cash only.

5. Sado Kinzan 佐渡金山 The Gold Mines of Sado

Visit one of Japan’s largest gold mines, Sado Kinzan, which was designated as a World Heritage Site in 2024. It is one of Sado Island’s main attractions that gives you a fascinating window into the island’s history. Once inside the tunnels, wander through atmospheric tunnels, see life-sized mannequins depicting Edo-period miners, and learn about the mine’s importance to Japan’s economy.

At the end, enter the exhibition room, and try picking up a real, solid gold bar behind glass. Sado Kinzan is open daily from 8 am to 5.30 pm., and tours typically last around an hour and a half. If you don’t have a car, take a bus on the Sado Kinzan line. I suggest combining this with a trip to Sado Nishimikawa Gold Park to try gold panning. It gets cold down in the mines, so it’s best to wear a light jacket, which can be worn for other activities.

6. Ogi Folk Museum

Head to the Ogi Folk Museum, located in the port town of Ogi, a great attraction for the whole family. This museum houses traditional boats, fishing tools, and cultural artefacts that tell the story of Sado’s seafaring heritage. There is even a life-size replica of a 19th-century Sengokubune freight ship, which you can go inside.

The Ogi Folk Museum is open daily from 8 AM to 5:30 PM. The prices are 500 JPY for adults and 200 JPY for children. The closest bus stop is Ogi Minzoku Hakubutsukan, located on the Shukunegi bus Line.

7. Eat local Sado Cruisnie

Sado Island is famous for its fresh seafood and Sado beef, known as “phantom Wagyu beef.” Seafood enthusiasts should try yellowtail and sushi paired with sake from one of Sado’s traditional breweries. For a sweet treat, look out for millet mochi, a chewy rice cake unique to the island.

Some of the top restaurants to visit on Sado Island that serve local food include Chozaburozushi, a Japanese eatery, and La Plage. This authentic French restaurant uses local ingredients, such as Sado’s Berkshire black pork and seafood, together. If you are looking for something more casual and on a budget, I recommend Shimafumi Bakery, which serves delicious local treats.

8. Obata Sake Brewery – Manotsuru

Sado’s fertile rice fields and pristine waters produce excellent sake. Obata Shuzo Brewery is recognised as the first sake brewery in Niigata to offer tours. The factory has won numerous awards, including gold medals at the National New Sake Awards. Visit Bobata Sake Brewery for a tour and sake tasting.

Here, you can sample locally brewed varieties, learn about the brewing process, and discover why Sado’s sake is so highly regarded. Afterwards, visit the on-site shop, a great place to buy sake as a souvenir. Sake and food tasting tours are available in English and Chinese. The tour is free and lasts approximately 20 to 30 minutes.

9. Try Taiko Experience at the Sado Island Taiko Centre

Sado is home to Kodo, one of Japan’s most renowned taiko groups, and you can try taiko drumming yourself at the Taiko Experience Centre. A ‘taiko‘ is a traditional Japanese percussion instrument. Members of Kodo teach visitors how to use bachi drumsticks and play taiko drums in an interactive learning experience.

The Sado Island Taiko Centre is located on the Ogi Peninsula at the southern tip of Sado Island. Reservations must be made at least three days in advance of your visit, and bookings can be arranged online through their official website. Learning to play the Taiko drums offers a fun cultural experience, ideal for the whole family.

In August, taiko drumming group Kodo held a renowned music festival called the Earth Celebration.

10. See crested ibises at Toki Forest Park.

See the rare crested ibises (birds) at Toki Forest Park, Sado Island. Located in the Niibo district on the eastern side of the Kuninaka Plain. The park is dedicated to conserving the Japanese crested ibis (toki), which was once nearly extinct, allowing visitors to observe these graceful birds from a safe distance.

Toki Forest Park includes a museum with educational displays about the preservation efforts for these Japanese crested ibises, an observation corridor, and breeding cages. It is open daily from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, with an entry fee of 500 yen for adults and 200 yen for children.

11. Hike in Osado Ishina Natural Cedar Forest

If you love the outdoors, I recommend hiking the Osado Ishina Natural Cedar Forest trail. The 650-meter trail has been constructed to help preserve the majestic cedar trees, complete with an elevated observation point. This trail is accessible to everyone, regardless of age, allowing anyone to enjoy walking or hiking on Sado Island.

The Himalayan cedar trees are unique due to their intricate shapes, resembling mammoth tusks. This endemic species developed in response to centuries of harsh weather conditions, including wind and snow, at high elevations. Ishina Cedar Forest is located in the northern part of Sado Island and is only accessible by car. Here is some more information about hiking routes in Niigata and Nagano.

Cedar Forest Trail Additional Information

  • Duration: – 1 hour to walk around the trail

14. Practical Tips for Visiting Sado Island, Japan

Download Google Translate to help with speaking longer sentences. It helps a lot, especially when travelling in rural areas of Japan without a guide. Or check out the Japanese Phrasebook with essential phrases and words from Collins Gem.

The best time to visit Sado Island is during late spring or early autumn, when the weather is better and there are fewer tourists. I went in October, and the weather was mild and pleasant.

Sado Island uses two types of adapters, A and B. Plug type A has two flat parallel pins, while plug type B has two flat parallel pins and a grounding pin. It is the same as in America.

Allow at least two days to explore Sado, though three to four days will allow you to experience the island at a more relaxed pace.
