Saint Nicolas De Véroce Saint-Gervais Mont Blanc ticks all the boxes for me in a ski holiday in France. It delivers the perfect balance of rustic beauty, exceptional skiing, warm mountain hospitality, and spectacular views of Mont Blanc. What makes it even more appealing is that it’s part of the Evasion Mont Blanc ski area, covering 400 kilometres of ski slopes. Whether you’re planning a family ski holiday, a skiing getaway with friends, or a culinary-focused alpine escape, this winter guide covers everything you need to know.

It is a ski resort that I would definitely go back to for a skiing trip in France.

Saint Nicolas de Veroce Winter Guide

Located on the quieter side of the Mont Blanc massif, Saint Nicolas de Véroce is a charming Alpine village that provides an authentic winter skiing experience in the French Alps. It is part of the larger Saint-Gervais–Les Contamines ski area, which features long, groomed blue runs that are perfect for beginners and families. Additionally, there are red runs for intermediate and advanced skiers. Plus steep terrain and deep powder in the off-piste areas, which are perfect for skiers and boarders looking for extra adventure.

Skiing in Saint Nicolas De Véroce, Saint-Gervais Mont-Blanc

Saint Nicolas de Véroce Snow Conditions

Thanks to its high-altitude location, Saint Nicolas de Véroce enjoys reliable snowfall throughout the winter. Most of its runs face north or are above 1,800m, which helps maintain good snow coverage even during milder spells. The season runs from mid-December to early April, depending on snow conditions. If you visit during mid-winter, such as January (when I was there skiing) and February, expect consistently snowy conditions and off-piste powder pockets.

Saint Nicolas de Véroce is located within two primary ski areas: the Saint-Gervais Mont Blanc and Evasion Mont Blanc ski areas. The Saint-Gervais-Saint-Nicolas area features 22 slopes, including 1 Green, 9 Blue, 8 Red, and 4 Black runs, all accessible via 9 ski lifts. Additionally, there are 15 kilometres of cross-country skiing trails located in the Plateau de La Croix section. You can check out the live webcam at Saint Nicolas de Veroce for the ski season here.

The slopes were big, wide and open around the Croix Du Christ chairlift, making turning easier. Around the Chattrix, they were also wide, but through the trees. This was my favourite spot to ski, especially after the fresh dump of snow. It felt more like we were off-piste skiing. Up high at the top of the Mont Joly chairlift, the views of the Mont-Blanc massif are exceptional. However, the only way down is a red or a black piste. If you decide on the red slope, there are a few steep bits that are a little narrow at the start before they end up being back on the wider slopes.

The St Nicolas de Véroce Évasion Mont-Blanc ski area

The Évasion Mont-Blanc ski area comprises 7 ski resorts, 110 ski lifts, covering 450 km of ski runs. Saint-Gervais Mont-Blanc, Megève, Saint-Nicolas de Véroce, Combloux, La Giettaz, Les Contamines Montjoie and Hauteluce. However, not all of the ski areas are connected by chairlifts or gondolas.

Megève, Saint-Gervais, and Saint-Nicolas-de-Véroce are linked via ski lifts, with the highest point being Mont Joly, at 2525 meters. On the opposite side of Mont Joly is Les Contamines-Montjoie and Hauteluce ski area, which can be reached by car or bus. Combloux and La Giettaz are on the other side of Megeve, accessible by chairlift and by crossing the town centre via a separate ski lift. Don’t forget your GoPro for all those action shots in the Evasion Mont-Blanc ski area.

Additional ski area Les Houches/Saint Gervais

On the opposite side of Saint-Gervais-les-Bains-Mont-Blanc, there are Le Prarion and Les Houches, which have 55 km of slopes. This is known as the Les Houches/Saint Gervais ski area and is accessed via the Mont Blanc Tramway (Tramway du Mont-Blanc). These resorts are not part of the Évasion Mont-Blanc ski area; they are separate ski resorts, so you need to purchase a different ski pass.

Ski passes for St Nicolas de Veroce.

There are two options regarding ski passes: the micro ski pass for the Saint-Nicolas ski area or one for the Evasion Mont Blanc ski area. The Mico Saint-Nicolas ski pass is available as a half-day, single-day or two-day ski pass. However, this can only be purchased directly from the ticket office. You will need an Evasion Mont Blanc ski pass to ski or snowboard in the Mont Joux area.

The Evasion Mont Blanc ski pass covers the Saint-Gervais, Saint-Nicolas de Véroce, Megève —Rochebrune—Côte 2000, Les Contamines—Hauteluce, Jaillet—Combloux, and La Giettaz ski areas. This ski pass is available for single-day, multi-day, season and year passes, which can be purchased online. Activities in Saint Nicolas De Veroce

Snowshoeing & Winter Trails

There are three marked snowshoe paths that you can do while in the Saint-Nicolas de Veroce area that wind through forests, plateaus, and high viewpoints. Make sure to wear your waterproof snow boots when you go snowshoeing or “raquettes”(known in French) for walking across the snow.

Baroque church of Saint-Nicolas-de-Véroce

Enjoy a cultural stroll through the Baroque Church of Saint-Nicolas and the adjacent Sacred Art Museum, both located in the heart of the village. Constructed in the first half of the 18th century, the church is regarded as a jewel of sacred Baroque art in the Savoie region. The church ceiling paintings are beautiful and worth seeing.

The Sacred Art Museum displays the treasures of the Saint-Nicolas church and houses temporary exhibitions based on the village and its colportage. It is not a large museum, so it should only take 15-20 minutes to walk around. The Baroque Church is free to enter and is open daily. The Sacred Art Museum is open weekly from Thursday to Sunday, and the entry fee is €3.50 per person/ €5.00 for a Guided tour. This is a great activity to do in the afternoon after skiing in Saint-Nicolas-de-Véroce.

Les Thermes de Saint Gervais

The Les Thermes de Saint Gervais is the perfect place to go on your own, with friends or even as a family. This 19th-century spa located in the main town of Saint Gervais is the only ‘alpine spa resort’ in the Alps. The natural spring water has supplied the spa for more than 200 years. It is made up of various spa pools, indoor and outdoor, which can be accessed via a plastic flap.

All the thermal pools are heated to around 38 degrees, and you can also enjoy the steam bath, sauna, hydro-massage alcoves, and massage jets. Beauty treatments such as massages, as well as specialised treatments for expectant mothers, are also on offer. Open daily from 9 am until 9 pm, Les Thermes de Saint Gervais is open year-round, and towels and robes are included in your entry fee. Please make sure to take your swimwear and wear it.

Saint Nicolas De Veroce Hotel Armancette

Armancette Hotel is a 5-star establishment that is part of “The Leading Hotels of the World” group. Situated in the centre of Saint Nicolas De Véroce village at the foot of Mont Blanc. This 17-room hotel features an indoor-outdoor pool, sauna, jacuzzi, gym, and a beauty treatment area. It also offers two restaurants, a bar area, and a terrace with stunning panoramic views of Mont Blanc.

This stunning hotel seamlessly blends old and contemporary architecture. The interior design features traditional wooden furnishings alongside marble. I was genuinely impressed by the meticulous attention to detail, even noting the drivers wearing traditional French and Swiss military berets.

Luxury Chalets in Saint-Gervais

I stayed in one of the three ski-in, ski-out luxury chalets owned by The Armancette Hotel. Situated directly on the Plateau de La Croix and along the Chattrix blue ski slope. The chalets are 5-10 minutes further up the mountain than the hotel, and a free shuttle service is available at the hotel’s front desk.

Our Armancette chalet features indoor and outdoor Jacuzzis, an adjoining sauna, a gym, and a ski room. All the bedrooms on the first floor are doubles with their own ensuite bathrooms, while on the top floor, there is a dormitory with four single beds. If you’re driving, there is a large underground car park. The most impressive part was the spectacular views of Mont Blanc.

Where to Eat Saint Nicolas De Véroce Restaurants

Le Tremplin De La Croix

Le Tremplin De La Croix (also known as Restaurant le Tremplin) is a cosy mountain restaurant that serves good food and wine. It is a great spot for lunch while skiing, located on the slope below the La Croix chairlift, with views across Saint-Gervais. I understand this place is usually fully booked, so if you know you want to eat here, I suggest booking in advance.

La Table d’Armante

La Table d’Armante definitely needs to be on your list, especially if you appreciate fine dining and quality food. The restaurant is gaining a reputation for reinventing gastronomic cuisine while preserving tradition. Three-star chef Antoine Westermann has carefully created the menu. Then, it was implemented by the talented chef Julien Darcy and looked like pieces of artwork.

With a classy, chic decor, scenic views, and beautifully cooked and presented food, La Table d’Armante is the perfect way to discover the flavour of the Alps.

Le Coin du Feu

Le Coin du Feu is a charming restaurant with a great atmosphere that showcases traditional Savoyard local food. It is located in the centre of Saint Nicolas village and is only a 2-minute walk from the Chef Lieu chairlift. During the day, you can sit on the terrace that faces Mont Blanc and take in the stunning views of the surrounding mountains. The food was delicious, especially the cheese-and-bacon dish.

Rond de Carotte

Rond de Carotte is located in the centre of town in Saint-Gervais; this fine-dining French restaurant was just a great way to end the trip. The food was carefully prepared, fresh and beautifully presented. Address: 50 Rue de la Vignette, Saint-Gervais-les-Bains, France

How to get to Saint Nicolas De Véroce

Geneva Airport

Geneva Airport is the closest and most convenient international airport for Saint-Nicolas-de-Véroce and Saint-Gervais. It is roughly 93.7 km and takes just over an hour to drive in good weather. EasyJet, British Airways, and Swiss International Air Lines offer direct flights from the UK to Geneva. Trip.com is a useful tool for comparing prices and booking flights with most airlines.

By Train

You can catch a direct train from Geneva to Le Fayet railway station in Saint-Gervais-les-Bains, which takes approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes. The Geneva train station is located under the airport. Once you arrive at Le Fayet railway station, you can take the free shuttle bus (Facilibus or Skibus) or arrange a taxi to Saint Nicolas. Train tickets can be booked in advance on Rail Europe.

Top tips for both St Nicolas de Véroce and Saint-Gervais

Consider using an eSIM, such as Airalo, for affordable mobile coverage while skiing in the Évasion Mont-Blanc ski area.
If you have time, take the Mont Blanc Tramway (Tramway du Mont-Blanc) for a scenic tour. The mountain rack railway is the highest in France.

Why Saint Nicolas de Véroce Should Be Your Next Winter Destination

I really liked where I stayed and what I saw in both Saint-Nicolas and Saint-Gervais-Mont-Blanc. Although we only skied for two full days, I felt like I had just scratched the surface of this vast ski area. If anything, it has made me want to go back and explore even more. Having Mont-Blanc as your backdrop and access to 500 kilometres of ski runs.

Plus, it is only an hour to an hour and a half from the Geneva International Airport. It makes both Saint-Nicolas and Saint-Gervais ski areas accessible, especially for weekends. Not to mention Armancette, a five-star hotel with three luxury chalets, which makes it even more appealing.
